Winning in One-Designs

by Dave Perry

A few years ago I was racing on a J24 in a regional regatta. We were doing well in the regatta and in this race. As we were going to upwind there was a loud retort and the jib luff went taut. We scrambled to discover what went wrong and learned that the clevis pin securing the forestay was missing. With over a hundred years of sailing and racing experience aboard (we didn't name the boat Grumpy Old Men without reason!) someone neglected to properly secure the clevis pin. This small error cost us the regatta; from first to third in a blink of an eye. Had we paid attention to Dave Perry's advice, we would have attended to the myriad small details that separate those at the front of the fleet from those in the rear.

Drawing on his vast experience as a successful competitive sailor, Perry provides a framework for building success on the race course. Starting with preparation, both mental and physical, he concludes with those small pieces of advice we had neglected. Along the way, he presents a logical and structured program to improve performance on the race course. His ideas are richly illustrated with anecdotes from his own experiences and other great sailors, the likes of Peter Isler, Paul Elvstrom, Gary Jobson, Brad Dellenbaugh, and others. Perry has a talent for presenting complex ideas in sailboat racing in a simple understandable manner; more than informative and entertaining, Perry motivates you to get out on the race course. Sailboat racing is challenging, frustrating, and fun. Winning in One-Designs captures those experiences and provides the basic information you need to begin winning races.

Perry provides a wealth of information in an easily read and understood style. Along the way we get to know the personality and mindset not only of Dave Perry but the others with whom he as sailed. More importantly for the aspiring competitive sailor and the experienced competitor who wants to improve his/her standing, Perry provides a textbook and program for improving results on the race course. If there is only one book you can purchase to further your competitive sailing career, this is the book to buy.
